‘He will rejoice over you with gladness.’ Zephaniah 3:17 NKJV
What’s your concept of God? When you pray, ‘Our Father,’ what do you see? Do you see a parent who abandoned you, abused you, or abdicated their responsibility to you? Do you think of an angry father who accused but never affirmed you; in other words, a God waiting to zap you each time you do wrong? If so, you need to change your concept of God. The Bible says: ‘The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing’ (v. 17 NKJV). Let’s break this Scripture down:
1) ‘The Lord your God in your midst.’ He is not a distant deity, but an up-close-and-personal Father who loves His redeemed children dearly.
2) ‘The Mighty One, will save.’ When you consider the word ‘mighty’, think of Hercules a billion times over and you still won’t even be close. Today you may be weak, but He is strong. Your sins may be great, but His saving grace is greater (see Romans 5:20).
3) ‘He will rejoice over you with gladness.’ Every time God looks at you, He smiles and rejoices. You make His heart glad. Did you know that?
4) ‘He will quiet you with His love.’ Ever watch a mother holding a crying baby and saying, ‘Shush, shush, it’s okay, I’m here, I love you.’ The baby is comforted, feels secure, and goes to sleep. That’s what God does for us.
5) ‘He will rejoice over you with singing.’ God sings! What does He sing about? You! It’s time to change your concept of God!- Bob and Debby Gass
The concept of God holds significant meaning for Christians. God is understood as the ultimate and supreme being, the creator and sustainer of all things, and the source of love, wisdom, and power. Christians believe that God is transcendent, existing beyond time and space, and yet immanent, intimately involved in the lives of individuals and the world.
To understand God better and feel closer to Him, Christians engage in various practices and disciplines. Here are a few ways:
1. Scripture: Christians turn to the Bible, considered the inspired word of God, to learn about His nature, character, and teachings. By studying and meditating on the scriptures, Christians gain insights into God’s purposes and how to align their lives with His will.
2. Prayer: Prayer is a vital means of communication and communion with God. Through prayer, Christians express their thoughts, desires, gratitude, and concerns to God. It is an opportunity to seek His guidance, surrender to His will, and experience His presence.
3. Worship: Christians gather together in corporate worship to honor and adore God. Through praise, thanksgiving, singing, and participating in rituals such as the sacraments, believers express their devotion and reverence, acknowledging God’s greatness and sovereignty.
4. Fellowship: Christians recognize the importance of community and fellowship with other believers. By coming together in supportive relationships, sharing experiences, studying the Word, and engaging in mutual encouragement, they can grow in their understanding of God and His purposes.
5. Service: Christians strive to live out their faith by serving others. Through acts of compassion, kindness, and selflessness, they embody God’s love and reflect His character to the world. By engaging in service, Christians not only express their devotion to God but also deepen their understanding of His heart for humanity.
6. Reflection and Contemplation: Taking time for silence, solitude, and reflection allows Christians to quiet their hearts and minds, creating space to listen for God’s voice and experience His presence. Through contemplative practices like meditation or journaling, individuals can gain insights and draw closer to God.
7. Personal Relationship: Central to Christianity is the belief in a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Christians believe that through faith in Jesus and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, they can experience a deep, personal connection with God. This relationship involves trust, surrender, and a continual pursuit of knowing and experiencing God’s love.
In summary, understanding and feeling closer to God for Christians involves engaging in practices such as studying the scriptures, prayer, worship, fellowship, service, reflection, and cultivating a personal relationship with Him. By actively pursuing these practices, Christians seek to deepen their understanding of God’s nature, draw nearer to Him, and experience His joy, love, and presence in their lives.
