Change your thinking, change your life

Book of Proverbs and Solomon

‘Let those with understanding receive guidance.’ Proverbs 1:5 NLT

Book of Proverbs and Solomon

Change your thinking- The book of Proverbs begins: ‘These are the proverbs of Solomon…Their purpose is to teach people wisdom…to help them understand the insights of the wise…to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair. These proverbs will give insight to the simple, knowledge and discernment to the young. Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. Let those with understanding receive guidance’ (Proverbs 1:1-5 NLT).

Creative thinking is simply disciplined thinking. If you think you know all there is to know, then you already know everything you’re ever going to know. In order to break out of the box, you must begin by asking the right questions. Sir Antony Jay said, ‘The uncreative mind can spot wrong answers, but it takes a creative mind to spot wrong questions.’ Wrong questions halt the process of creative thinking. They send you down the same old path. In order to change your life, you must change your thinking. That means you must be willing to ask these two questions: ‘Why must it always be done this way? Is there a better way?’

Whether your goal is to build a better life, or a better family, or a better business, or a better church, or a better career, or a better ‘anything’, all change and progress must begin by honestly asking those two questions. The saying is true: ‘If you build a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your door.’ So, do you want to succeed? You must be willing to change your thinking in order to accomplish it.

Solomon and Proverbs

Solomon was a king of Israel who lived during the 10th century BCE. He was the son of King David and Bathsheba and succeeded his father as king. Solomon is known for his wisdom and his building projects, including the construction of the first temple in Jerusalem.

Solomon’s wisdom was said to have been granted to him by God when he asked for it. One famous story tells of two women who came before him, each claiming to be the mother of a baby. Solomon ordered the baby be cut in half and divided between them. One woman agreed, while the other begged him not to harm the child and instead give it to the other woman. Solomon awarded the baby to the second woman, recognizing her as the true mother.

Solomon is also known for his wealth and international trade. The Bible says that he had 700 wives and 300 concubines, many of whom were from foreign lands and brought with them their own religious beliefs. This led to Solomon worshiping other gods and alienating the Israelites, which eventually led to the division of the kingdom after his death.

The book of Proverbs, which is attributed to Solomon, is found in the Old Testament of the Bible. It is a collection of wise sayings and advice on various topics such as wisdom, virtue, and the fear of God. The book is written in poetic form and is intended to teach readers how to live a righteous life.

Proverbs is divided into 31 chapters, each containing a different set of sayings and teachings. Some of the most famous proverbs include “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (16:18) and “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (3:5).

In addition to Proverbs, Solomon is credited with writing Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon, which are also found in the Old Testament. Ecclesiastes is a philosophical meditation on the meaning of life, while the Song of Solomon is a love poem. Together, these books show the breadth of Solomon’s wisdom and his understanding of the human experience.

Overall, Solomon is remembered as a wise and powerful king who left a lasting legacy through his building projects and his writings. His wisdom and teachings continue to inspire people around the world to this day.
